The Girls Basketball Team ended the season with a record of 5-9 in district and 10-16 overall. The last game of the season was a hard-fought game against Kingwood Park on Saturday, February 6th. Unfortunately, they were unable to come out on top. Overall they have had a good season considering that within the fairly young varsity team, only four players had varsity level experience from the previous season.
The girls started the season with some close games that ended in losses. However, they had some very successful wins against Galena Park, Terry, Splendora, South Houston, and Klein Forest. The first win in district play came against Cleveland High School, as it was also the second game of district play. Allie Seybert was able to put the girls on the scoreboard by drilling a three-pointer. In the second quarter, the girls gained a lead by scoring 13 points, while Cleveland only scored 2. In the final stretch, they were able to maintain the lead by scoring another 16 points. Cieara Dinwiddie led the team with 14 points. The final score for the Spartan’s first district win was 47-24.
The Spartan Women’s second to last district game was against the Montgomery Bears. This game was much different than the first time they played together. This time the girls had a clear lead throughout the entire game. Megan Stevenson helped the team by scoring 13 points followed by Cieara Dinwiddie with 11 points. Finishing off the win with a final score of 47-32.
Although the girls were unable to make the postseason many great things were accomplished, such as improving their record from last season. With only two seniors on the squad, they “officially” said goodbye to the program. However, there is room for growth in the young varsity team, as they will make their mark here at Porter High School.
