The Spanish department has started their annual Spanish spelling bee which will be held on November 15, 2023.
The Spanish department aims to host a spelling bee annually when possible for students to have a fun, learn enhanced experiences that aim to improve their grammar, boost their confidence and communication skills, and experience life long skills. This year the spelling bee consists of 1,237 words which vary from different levels of spelling and pronunciation.
“The spelling bee started 10 years ago in Galena Park ISD, Northshore High School, I was a teacher for the high school and they had started the spelling bee themselves with prizes students could compete for depending on the spot they placed,” said Spanish teacher Mr. Luis Valle. “I decided to bring that idea here to Porter. The first Spanish spelling bee hosted here at Porter took place on May 17, 2022 where students from Spanish 1, and native Spanish speakers competed in,” said Mr. Valle.
“I have participated for the last 2 years in the Spanish spelling bee. I have had an amazing and wonderful experience. I am honored to be able to work with Mr. Valle and the rest of my student colleges being able to help each other, challenge ourselves and see each other grow up,” said Nelcy Rivas, a student that has partaken in the Spanish spelling bee within the last few years. “I recommend the Spanish spelling bee to anyone who would like to join, it is a good way to enhance your Spanish vocabulary, connect with your classmates, and have lasting memories about high school.” said Rivas.
This year the spelling bee will take place November 15, 2023 at 7:15 a.m. in the LGI. Teachers are welcomed to watch with their class as long as they respect and follow the rules of the event and take into account space limitations.
