As we have moved deeper into the district football season, our Varsity and JV Spartans have made strives to improve their work on the field. Having competed against KPark, Port Arthur Memorial, Baytown Sterling & Crosby. First, on September 7 and 8, Spartans competed at HISD’s Turner Stadium against the Kingwood Park Panthers, on their homecoming game. Starting off slow, the Panthers started with a lead over the Spartans, but in the second half of the game, our Spartans took the lead, ending the game with a 27 to 21 win.
“As a team, I feel like we have definitely improved our overall chemistry and are playing a lot better as a team than we did at the start,” said Senior Ryan Gilliam. “… two main goals that we have are to win the district title and make the playoffs… It can be stressful at times just due to being the best student-athlete I can be and managing my time through school and sports, but honestly, I wouldn’t trade it for the world because it’s what I love to do.”
Following KPark, on Friday, September 15, our Spartans went up against the Port Arthur Titans. Unfortunately, the Spartans this night fell short at Randell Reed and lost 28 to 45. This gratefully did not worry our amazing football team since that following Thursday, September 28, our Spartans traveled to Baytown and destroyed the Sterling Rangers in a brutal 35 to 7 win.
Next, on October 5, back at Randell Reed, our Spartans played their Gold Out game in support of Breast Cancer Awareness Month. That night the Spartans won against the Crosby Cougars with an 8-point lead, ending the night with 28 – 20. Lastly, over the October break, our Spartan fell short on Friday, October 13, 2023, against the La Porte Bulldogs. From the top of the game, it was neck and neck, with each team tying up the score every chance, but in the end, our Spartans could not stand up against the Bulldogs and ended the night with a 42 – 56 loss.
Now that we are getting closer to the end of the season, our Porter Spartans are really pushing it to make the playoffs, currently 5th in the district, and have a win-to-loss ratio of 3-2, all our Varsity Players need to push through the last three games of the season.
