As the new school year rolled around, many new rules came along with it. The new eight period schedule, the new tardy policy, but one that has stood out to many students is the new exemption policy. According to the New Caney ISD School District, only juniors and seniors can exempt up to three finals their fall semester, but freshmen and sophomores cannot exempt any finals either semester. Sophomore students Michael Morgan, Ayla Dalyan, and Geometry/Algebra 1 teacher Mrs. Alford were asked about their opinions on the new exemption policy.
When asked about his thoughts on the new exemption policy, Michael Morgan said, “As a sophomore, I am not happy that I cannot exempt finals this year and that is because it is the very end of the year. I put in all this hard work, and now I’ll be forced to do these finals. I’ll have to do all this extra work in order to maintain my grade. That just sounds really annoying and irritating especially when the solution to it is super simple since it already exists.”
“I am very involved in fine arts companies and different things that I do at this school. I compete all the time, so having this new policy is unhelpful because I literally am boxed down with work even more than before,” said Ayla Dalyan.
“I think it’s good for you guys to practice taking finals because it’s preparing you for college. Because in college, you’re not going to get to exempt your finals,” said Mrs. Alford.
