The internet sensation known as “Barbenheimer” was created after the release dates for the movies “Barbie” and “Oppenheimer” were announced on the same day. What sparked this double feature was the contrast between the two films and how different they were from each other. While Barbie is a peppy comedy, Oppenheimer is a serious historically-based movie. Because of this uproar, it acquired more people to watch both films than initially intended.
Barbie, directed by Greta Gerwig, is a film about the popular toy, Barbie by Mattel. In this movie, Barbie discovers the real world and its issues with sexism, which the dolls thought they solved. She realizes how to think for herself, while Ken learns how to be more independent.
“[Barbie] touches on the topic of feminism and toxic masculinity in a non-threatening way while emphasizing Barbie’s impact on the world,” Senior Lena Conde Araujo said.
Oppenheimer, directed by Christopher Nolan, is based on the true story of J. Robert Oppenheimer and how he created the atomic bomb. It is a story full of betrayal, twists, and insanity.
Though both films are a good watch filled with gorgeous sets and A-list actors, they were made for different audiences. Barbie is more fun and easier to watch, while Oppenheimer has a more intricate plot that takes longer to digest after watching it. Moreover, Barbie has a great soundtrack that includes many popular artists such as Lizzo, Dua Lipa, Tame Impala, Billie Eilish, and more. On the same note, Oppenheimer has a fantastic score that improves and adds to the cinematography. While it may not contain as many songs, the score, and sound effects feel real and take the audience into the story.
“I think the drama of Oppenheimer and the story had a lot of gravity to it,” Choir director Gregory Goedecke said.
Although Barbie has a fantastic message for both girls and boys alike, the plot is not as put together as Oppenheimer’s. There are many moments in the film that could be cut out, including product placements and scenes where things dragged on for too long. As for Oppenheimer, the film takes longer to understand and the message is hard to find.
If you want to have a fun time and a good laugh, Barbie is the best film for you. If you’re into historical, drama-filled movies full of twists and turns, Oppenheimer is the better choice.
