Class of 2024 officers announce prom theme – Met Gala

Last year, many seniors were upset with the prom theme ‘Enchanted Gardens’ because it had been used within the previous three years, and for the fact that it was “basic.” This year though, students are given a more original theme: ‘Met Gala’.

“It is very versatile for all students, so no one’s gonna have to be battling on how to match the theme,” said Samantha Cerda, the secretary of the senior officers.

“It’s also gonna be easier to decorate and it’s just giving ‘party’ overall instead of a specific theme,” added Mirna Ramirez, the president of the senior officers.

The Met Gala is held annually in May as a fundraiser and charity event for The Metropolitan Museum of Art’s Costume Institute, which is commonly thought of with elegance, costumes, and luxury as it welcomes the beginning of spring, which is why the senior officers agreed on this theme.

Compared to previous prom themes, the one for 2024’s seniors is much more open to different designs, colours, lengths of dresses, make-up, and so on. Even so, there are still a handful of seniors who are upset with the theme, which is understandable given the theme can be too generalized. While seniors and other attendees have more leeway in their choice of dress, there isn’t an exact look which is labelled as ‘Met Gala’.

While some senior girls agreed that the theme for this year’s prom is more original than previous years, the Met Gala is an event without an exact ‘theme’ since it’s so broad. It isn’t the most interesting or decor-simple theme, but many people agreed that it is much better than last year’s theme ‘Enchanted Gardens’.

“I wish it was more detailed because the broadness of the theme makes it boring,” said Farah Shahzad, a senior.

“The Met Gala is going to definitely be a challenge to accomplish, but the officers feel that they are willing to take the challenge,” said Xavier Ramirez, another senior.

The president and secretary explained that the decorations at prom would be a surprise. Last year, there were many fresh flowers decorated everywhere for the party, but since the theme for this year can be so abstract, the expectations are scattered.
