New Caney ISD is preparing for a new schedule change for the 2024-2025 school year. Due to academic and flexibility problems within the school, the principal, along with the district have come to the conclusion that a new schedule is needed not only for better academic success for the students but also to help those districts around us as well as the bus drivers.
Instead of classes starting at 7:15 a.m., our school has decided to start at 7:45 a.m. Other changes that will happen and be taken into action are removing double-blocked classes/electives to eight-period classes per day. Class duration is going to change from 90 minutes to 45 minutes per class, and school will no longer end at 2:50 p.m.
“This actually started two years ago and there is a big community of people from the district from teachers, to coaches, directors, people from the central office, principals and more who talked about what they felt would be something better for the students as far as their schedule, “said Principal Cesar Condarco. “When we look at our current schedule it’s actually great for the kids since they have more of a choice for what they want to do outside their core classes, but at the same time, we feel like it really hurts the students in other ways academically. Some only see their math teacher every other day as well as other important classes, so it’s really hard for when they’re learning concepts in classes in which we feel like students should be seeing their teachers every day.”
Besides the academic reasons mentioned above, a big part of the reason for the schedule change is to help bus drivers with their time and flexibility. Even though right now Porter High School isn’t facing as many bus problems as other schools and districts are, there is a big possibility of that happening in the future like buses being late or not being able to offer their service to field trips or similar events. With the help of the new schedule, the school is expecting to help those districts around the area and also be able to offer the students the chance to go on more field trips and school-related events.
As students start to learn about the upcoming changes they also start to give out their own opinions about how they feel the new schedule is going to affect them. This schedule will either help them in a positive or negative way due to the fact that they are going to be facing the change of going from five classes to eight classes per day.
¨I think the new school schedule is going to have a bad effect because on students because it is hard to learn anything in 45 minutes and with eight periods a day there will be a large workload all at once, ” said junior Korrine Johnson.
While the amount of classes per day may seem overwhelming to students, the district and teachers believe that a 45-minute class may be more beneficial to the academic success of the students. Teachers and admin alike think the new schedule helps the teachers to truly focus on the concept/lesson and it makes it easier for them to teach. It also helps the students being able to see their teachers every day of the school week instead of every other day.
As of now, the new start and end schedule is below. More information and details on specific class schedules will be released closer to the 24-25 school year.
