Noah Hawver; First PHS student to head to state for Academic UIL

Xavier Martinez

On Saturday, April 23 our Current Issues & Events team and Brandon Kusaj in Spelling competed at the UIL Regionals. For some, this was a new learning experience and for others, it was a time to grow from last year. And with an outcome of having our first student make it to state, and two others really close. All that can be said is well done.

One of the biggest things for the students to face was a difference in the competition. Compared to District, the tests for some are changed a bit, and with everyone their making placement at their District. The stakes were really high.

“Our students definitely saw the difference in competition, it was more difficult, but that was something that affected everyone. They did a great job and had two others nearly placed, and I am incredibly proud of all five of them. It feels great to get our first Porter Current Issues & Events person to State, though I wish the whole team could be going with Noah too. I’m also excited to see how he grows given that he made it to State as just a sophomore! Hopefully, next year we’ll be taking a much bigger contingent to state too.” said Academic UIL Sponsor, and Current Issues & Events Coach, Mr. Levy.

With Noah Hawver being the first-ever Spartan to head to state. He has a lot of pressure, but he is also very grateful and up for the challenge he is going to face at Austin.

“It’s kind of surreal, to be honest, but I’m going to try my best to represent our school in Austin!” said Noah Hawver. “One part of the event is an essay that I did surprisingly well on. I’m hoping to get a chance to review my essay before state and focus on what I did right. Another thing that helps me study is these NY Times news quizzes that I did with my team, which is actually where a lot of the test questions were sourced from.”

Congratulations to all students who made it to Region and a Special Congrats to Noah Hawver, and Good Luck at State.
