New PHS Interact club creates service, community opportunities for students
March 3, 2022
Although it is the second semester, the Interact club has begun and is looking for new members to join. Meetings are Friday mornings before school in room D101. In the Interact club, students are given the opportunity to give back to the community and earn service hours.
¨It is a service organization; we are connected to Rotary club international. We are able to perform local community service and state-level community service even national and international level, it just really depends on what the students are interested in doing,¨ said sponsor, Rebecca Small, senior English teacher.
Interact is a service organization where students get to do community service and help. Interact also partners with other organizations such as Student Council and others in order to create community service events.
¨We get to do acts of service. We are also planning to do random acts of kindness for example for the custodians and doing something nice for them. We are talking about doing something for Teen Mental Wellness Day, International Women’s Day, and creating some baskets for abused women in shelters. In April, we are looking forward to partnering with STUCO for an Easter egg hunt and Earth Day,” said Ms. Small.
The Interact club creates more opportunities for students to find ways to do community service because many have no time or don’t know where to look for these community service opportunities. This allows students to not worry about looking for service opportunities out of school and allows them to do more community service.
¨Here (at PHS) it is really independent and we have to figure it out on our own, there are lots of students that have so many things going on that they don’t have time to look for those service opportunities. Having a club here on campus that has those opportunities seems like a really good idea, ” said Interact club President, Rebeca Martinez.
In Interact, students are able to earn service hours and get recognized for the service hours. Not only does interaction create opportunities to do community service but also gives students the opportunity to make friends and memories by helping the community. ¨I think it is great; it is something we can definitely benefit from here. I am excited by the enthusiasm of the students. It puts us in touch with the community, it gives us a way to connect with the community in a way that isn’t athletics band, or something like that, this is a different approach. It is a way to serve the community a way to help anyone who needs help,” said Ms. Small.
