The New Caney ISD Board of Trustees unanimously voted to name Matt Calvert the lone finalist for superintendent of schools Monday, March 15, at its regular meeting. State law requires a 21-day waiting period before superintendent finalists can officially be hired.

Calvert has served as the district’s deputy superintendent since 2017. He came to New Caney ISD in 2015 as the district’s executive director of finance. Calvert has more than 16 years of experience in public education. He began his career in 2004 as a teacher and coach and later served as an elementary assistant principal, elementary lead principal, and assistant superintendent of business and financial services before coming to New Caney ISD.

“Mr. Calvert has demonstrated a tremendous commitment to the New Caney ISD community, especially our students, over the last six years,” Board President Chad Turner said. “His knowledge and experience have been important in helping our district grow, but it’s his responsible stewardship of our district through some difficult times that really stands out. It’s important that our community has trust in the school district. Mr. Calvert has earned our trust, and we can look forward to a bright future under his leadership.”

Calvert has played an integral role in managing New Caney ISD’s fast enrollment growth, leading the district’s long-term strategic planning and capital improvement processes, including the construction of Dogwood Elementary School, Infinity Early College High School, and the district natatorium. Current projects include the new Keefer Crossing Middle School and construction of the district’s third comprehensive high school scheduled to open in 2022. Calvert also led the district’s operational efforts through several major natural disasters, including Hurricane Harvey and the district’s response to the current COVID-19 pandemic through which New Caney ISD schools have been able to maintain educational services to all 16,000 of its students. Under his leadership of the business office, the district adopted balanced budgets, improved the district’s credit rating, and completed multiple bond refunding processes saving the district millions of dollars.

“I am honored and grateful to have the opportunity to serve New Caney ISD as superintendent of schools,” Calvert said. “There are such wonderful people in this community, and I am in awe of the professionalism and dedication to students our staff continually demonstrate in their work. New Caney ISD is one of the most dynamic school districts in Texas. It is a privilege to work here and the opportunity of a lifetime to serve as superintendent. We will continue to put students first in all that we do and work as hard as we can to provide a great education to the children of this community.”

Calvert graduated from East Texas Baptist University with a bachelor’s degree in business administration, and he earned a master’s in educational administration from Stephen F. Austin State University. Calvert and his wife, Molly, have lived in the school district since their arrival in 2015. They have two children, Canon and Maggie, who attend New Caney ISD schools.
